This exhibition gives you a small glimpse into the diverse and rich community of printmakers on the Coast. It shares the breadth of approaches to printmaking, with a focus on storytelling the materials and processes involved. We have invited artists who live and work on the Lower Coast to share work that expresses their unique space in the diversity of print forms. Included here are woodblocks, lithography, etchings, gel printing, textile printing and so many others.
Now launching our new print media focus at the Arts Center, with our revised print studio, a library, and workshops and classes that will be on offer for all skill levels. This focus is a reflection of the rich community of printmaking practices that thrives locally, and we are excited to share this over the coming months.
This exhibition also shares the work of late, Coast-based artist Barry Wainwright. It includes a selection of works made after his retirement to the Sunshine Coast in the late 1990s. While printmaking was central to Wainwright’s practice, he also incorporated mediums such as oil pastels, and paint over the years. Wainwright explored the liminal realms of signs, symbols, surrealism, the demi-monde, the erotic, the exotic, the conventional, and the contrived of the astral landscape expressed through both figurative and abstract idioms. His body of work reflects the breadth of the human condition and the experience. We are honored to have been entrusted with the late Robert Barry Wainwright’s book and print collection. We extend immense gratitude to the Wainwright family, with special acknowledgement to Carla Wainwright for her generosity in bestowing the gift of her father’s works with us.

Yvon Lantaigne
Yvon’s formal education in graphic design began well before the advent of personal computers. His love of typography was significantly influenced by hands-on training in early letterpress printing methods. This was followed by a stint as a typesetter in a letterpress printshop where he was tasked with hand-setting and casting hot metal type on Ludlow linecasting equipment, as well as assembling his own forms for the presses. This firsthand exposure to letterpress would bring about a transformative change in Lantaigne’s career when, after 20+ years of designing with type by digital means, he would come full circle and return to analog methods for arranging type for the page. This watershed moment occurred in 2007, while attending letterpress poster design workshops. Here the concept that letterpress had transformed from a dominant commercial industry into a late 20th century renaissance was introduced, a niche craft and artisanal artform.
Yvon has since been experimenting with various alternative processes on his extensive collection of vintage and antique letterpress printing presses at Fox & Found Press, an extension of his graphic design practice, now located in Halfmoon Bay. Here hand-set metal and woodtype are combined with hand-carved linocut and wood blocks and hand-printed on a variety of substrates, creating personal printed works in limited editions, handmade journals & sketchbooks. Training workshops will be on offer soon.

Jennifer Love + Nadina Tandy
Jennifer is currently exploring the layered, shifting meanings of home and belonging in her work. Home is often thought of as a fixed place, yet for many it is fluid, fragile, carried within or extending into the natural world. As an artist and workshop instructor for over 40 years, Jennifer’s journey has involved constant learning and evolution. She co-owned and ran a craft supplies shop in Australia, completed the Textile Arts program at Capilano College, cofounded Foxglove Fibre Arts Studio & Gallery on Bowen Island and for 13 years was the BC rep for the Surface Design Association. in the last decade, she has become increasingly captivated by the intuitive and unpredictable possibilities of monoprinting with a gel plate. Jennifer is on a mission to share this passion with others. She has exhibited and taught art workshops widely in Australia, BC and Calgary, Alberta.
Vancouver-born Nadina Tandy (1962) has extensive experience in varied aspects of art and culture, since 1988. She earned a Fine Arts diploma from Langara College (Vancouver) and studied drawing and painting at Emily Carr University of Art + Design (Vancouver). She also completed photography certificate studies at Concordia University (Montreal). Tandy has a broad exhibition history and her works are part of private and public collections throughout North America and Europe. Her work has been featured in print and on television and radio and she has also produced artwork for several book covers.
