Still Present, Castle Cannon, Loving Rust
A collage of found object trash art called “Street Metal” mixed media art projects. All the base frames, images and metals are used as they were found. Nothing has been changed, painted or cleaned. The gleaned rusty metals tell a story of unnoticed and discarded items in the gutters and margins of the neighbourhoods we clean. I find a certain calmness in the street-combing that is pleasurable, and an excitement to see what old treasures are hidden in plain view. Some of my co-workers have contributed to my supply of rusty bits. When displayed viewers play a game of “where’s Waldo”. Like how many zipper pulls do you see. I noticed a sense of pride when they stated “I gave her that piece”. My artwork is a statement of seeing value in the marginalized and underemployed people with whom I work.
