From Plant to Pattern – Dyeing with Indigo
Natalie Grambow, July 26-27, 10am-4pm
Tuition: $275/$325 (MEM/NON) max 10 students (includes all materials)
Camp isn’t only for kids! Join this very special hands-on immersive “summer art camp” for adults with master instructor, Natalie Grambow, and delve into the magical world of indigo. Come learn about, and play with, this ancient plant dye that has enchanted people across the world for centuries with its beautiful blues.
You will learn how to build your own organic indigo vat from scratch and explore bound resist techniques (shibori) to create striking patterns using binding, folding and stitching. You will also explore how to use clay paste to paint and/or print onto fabric, which in turn resists the dye, creating intricate one-of-a-kind patterns and designs.
Participants will come away with an understanding of the science and artistry around indigo dyeing, as well as many samples on cloth of various techniques taught at camp. This “camp” is perfect for anyone curious about indigo blue as a natural plant colour, hand-dyeing, and traditional and easy to learn techniques to create patterns and designs while layering blues on cloth. All supplies will be provided.
