The Intimate Universe
My work examines the nature of consciousness itself. As an artist, I am interested in where psychology, mythology, philosophy, biology, quantum physics, and feminist theory intersect. I expand on these intersections through fractals, symbols, and abstracted flowing forms and landscapes. Overall, my work is about the intimacy of relationships (or lack of) at every level, from the micro to the macro.
Wide-ranging research is a big part of my practice. From peer-reviewed research journals to time spent observing nature and its systems, I draw from the tiniest quarks and mycelium, all the way to our much larger human forms. I combine this with what I learn from clients as a clinical counsellor and art therapist about the human experience and how we relate to ourselves and the world. The fractal patterns and symbolic imagery respond to these experiences and are made into sculptural forms. These sculptural bases are built with repurposed cardboard and covered with paper mache or paper clay.
The final stage makes use of stockpiles of collage and fibre materials in my studio that have been repurposed, collected, and donated over my many years as an artist. My studio maintains as small of a carbon footprint as possible, so very few new materials are used in the creation of my work, other than paint or clay. These materials are used to craft and configure the multi-layered, nature-based, symbolic forms and fractal patterns that adorn my surfaces.
