Create a collage out of local, natural materials gathered from a place that is meaningful to you. How do you identify plants? How can plants tell the story of a place? What plants are important to you? Why?

TEACHER PRE-CLASS PREPARATION:

Here are some things that you, the teacher, will need to prepare prior to the activity.

  • paper for the frottage rubbings (computer paper is fine)
  • scissors
  • glue sticks / white glue
  • pencils, pencil crayons, crayons

KIT INCLUDES:

  • Foraging Bag with instructions
  • Cardstock for mounting
  • Sample sheet for foraging
  • Sample frottage for sharing

Class 1: Our Ancient Forests

Introduce the Dakota Bear Sanctuary in your class. What is an ancient forest? What does ancient mean? Have students share a story about the last time they were in the forest. What do they remember?  Have they ever seen a bear den? What do they imagine the home of a bear to look like? What other homes for animals can they imagine? 

Class 2: Going for a Walk

Go for a walk in the forest with the foraging bag. Have your students collect one of each of the following: 

Fern leaf, cedar bark, salal leaf, moss, cedar, pine branch, and anything else they would like to play with. Remember to also collect a stick. 

Class 3: Creative Workshop

Once students have gathered their materials during the walk, you are now ready to watch the workshop video below and start to make your eco-collage. 

Class 4: Visiting the Exhibition

Visit the gallery between April 23rd – May 23rd for a tour of the exhibition and a chance to see and talk about the work.
