Banner Project: “Above + Below the Clouds”

The Banner Project brings together elementary schools across the Sunshine Coast to make work under one theme. Each year young artists develop their ideas for the banners in the classroom, and 20 final designs are selected to be hand-painted onto banners by artists, parents, students, and volunteers. This year’s exhibition includes nearly 300 submissions from across the Coast. This wonderful, intergenerational art-making project has been in place since 1994. The banners are installed in Sechelt’s Civic Square where they remain from February to November.

This year we invite you to help select banner designs! Ask for voting dots at the front desk: each person gets 3! Place one dot above/below each of your selections.

The SCAC would like to thank Clayton’s Heritage Market for their ongoing support in making the annual Banner Project possible. We would also like to thank the District of Sechelt for their support of the Banner display, and Christel Evers for leading the Banner Painting.

History of the Banner Project

The Cowrie Street Banner Project began in 1994 as a joint venture between the Sechelt Chamber of Commerce and the Sunshine Coast Arts Council. In approximately 2003, the priorities of the Chamber of Commerce changed, and the project is now sponsored entirely by the Sunshine Coast Arts Council. From 1994–2014 the banners decorated Sechelt’s Cowrie and Wharf streets. As of 2014, the banners are hung in Sechelt’s Civic Square creating their own outdoor gallery.
