Janice Rafael is a self-taught, contemporary abstract painter. Starting her artistic career in high school by winning a fine arts award, Janice has since presented her work in over 10 juried art exhibitions in the UK and Canada. She currently lives in Sechelt after previously living in Powell River, Auckland, Victoria, Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto, and London, England. Janice recently studied under the direction of Jenni White, an English, watercolour artist, during a three-week workshop around Spain and Portugal. Janice works in acrylic, watercolour and mixed media with her eclectic, signature works consisting of bold, bright colours with heavily-layered impasto effects. “My art reflects a commitment to recycling, re-using canvases found in local thrift stores when possible. Art is an expression of the world and inspired by nature. I paint; I fold – creating the art in a physical way. I lay the canvas on the ground and pour and squeeze paint onto it – then manipulate the paint with fingers, paper towels, scrapers, sponges and brushes.
Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated by the endless oscillations of the universe.”
