The Growing Season with The Only Animal
In summer 2025, The Only Animal’s artistic director Barbara Adler and the Sunshine Coast Arts Council are collaborating to convene an emergent artist residency that will emphasize accessibility, disability justice and connection with the land. Bringing together local artists and organizations alongside off-Coast guests, they’ll share a series of curated artist workshops, talks and open studios in relation to the growing season at accessible growing sites in Sechelt and Gibsons.
‘The Growing Season’ runs May – October and connects the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre and KIOSK, a new tiny mobile studio at Persephone Beer Farm

From ink and paper-making to drawing, illustration, photography, weaving, dyeing, fibre-processing, writing, sound and film –– KIOSK showcases the expansive practices of Sunshine Coast artists working with locally grown, gathered and found materials.

Access and Disability Justice: Mosaic Mending at the Sunshine Coast Arts Council
Megan Dewar uses mosaic to visibly mend access barriers at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, creating an Access and Disability Justice commitment framework to integrate into programming, projects, and procedures. This project will collaborate with The Only Animal, the Cinder Circle Collective, and the Sunshine Coast Arts Council throughout the summer to activate the relationship between accessibility, and sustainable growing.
The Only Animal’s Slow Social Club
The Only Animal hosts relaxed meet-ups to share methods for slow, process-led art making using seasonal plants and other local materials. Once a month, you’ll meet a guest artist, work with freshly gathered materials and encounter a short reading selected for you by the artist. Meet your neighbours – human, and ‘non-human’ – and enjoy hands-on creativity inspired by the seasonal rhythms of our home.
