MEET THE ARTISTS AT THE ART CRAWL: October 18 – 20, 10AM – 5PM
denise allen is an emerging illustrator and artivist with a home-based studio practice in kalpilin on the shíshálh swiya/Garden Bay on the Sunshine Coast. She likes to play in the negative space: high contrast and strong statements in traditional methods and mediums (drawing and painting in ink and graphite, linocut printmaking and collage). She also creates protest art and social conversation starters. A recovering scientist and lifelong wet coaster, she is fascinated with both the resilience/architecture of the natural world and the ephemerality of human life. The motivating forces behind her evolving practice are curiosity, solastalgia and new ways of knowing. “My content is my process, and as a settler/artist, I am a parallel work in progress.
Teresa Selbee-Baker is a Canadian early career oil painter living and working on Savary Island BC. Selbee-Baker completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and photography from Thompson Rivers University in 2006. Her work has been shown through solo and group exhibitions in BC, as well as in Chicago IL and internationally in virtual exhibitions. Selbee-Bakers work has been reviewed in publications such as Artist Talk Magazine, Suboart Magazine, and Art Seen Magazine. She has also been featured in a radio interview with CBC Radio One’s North by Northwest program and awarded a residency with Atelier Artist in Residence for 2025. Since 2020, she has been an active member of the Thrive Together Network, an international collective that fosters community over competition for womxn artists. “My art is a reflection of my journey through life, seen through the lens of my unique experiences and feminine perspectives. I use oil paint and photography to explore themes of memory, identity and connection through layering landscapes and portraits. I am an observer of the world; analyzing shapes, colours, edges, and contours, all in pursuit of a deeper understanding and connection.”
Allie Bartlett is an interdisciplinary visual artist from Nova Scotia. She attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design as well as the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts, where she received her BFA in Studio Art. She has previously worked at institutions such as the Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity and the Audain Art Museum. Outside of the museum, Allie can be found hiking with her film camera and identifying local flora along the Sunshine Coast. “I am often inspired by my work with archival photographs, both the idea of preserving snapshots and the images themselves intrigue me. Using a combination of analog photographic methods and collage, I create layered images that capture a sense of nostalgia and seek to preserve fleeting moments. The combination of technique and motif, instant photography and memory, is grounded in the landscape of the Sunshine Coast. Throughout this body of work I am considering the environmental impact of artmaking and my artistic footprint.”
